the circle game - joni mitchell

Yesterday, a child came out to wander
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Then, the child moved ten times 'round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, "When you're older", must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
And they tell him, "Take your time. It won't be long now.
'Til you drag your feet to slow the circles down"

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through.

And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and 'round and 'round
In the circle game
And go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game.

this may be really pretentious of me to say, but, the xx is perfect make-out music.

jerk offs

both of the roommates are out for the night, which means i can watch my favourite guidos and guidettes without being severely judged.
i truly believe that Jersey Shore should only be watched,
a)alone, wallowing in your own shame, or
b)with a lot of people, while getting drunk

[every time Sammi says "we're done!" or "i'm done with him!", take a drink!]

hackensack - fountains of wayne

i used to know you when we were young
you were in all my dreams
we sat together in period 1
fridays at 8:15
now i see your face in the strangest places;
movies & magazines
yeah, i saw you talkin' to Christopher Walken on my t.v. screen

and i will wait for you
as long as i need to
and if you ever get back to Hackensack
i'll be here for you

i used to work at the record store
now i work for my dad
chipping the paint off of hardwood floors
the hours are pretty bad
now i sit and wonder where you are
probably in L.A.
that seems to be where everybody else ends up these days

but i will wait for you
as long as i need to
and if you ever get back to Hackensack
i'll be here for you

susan lucci?

"what do you call your house again?" "um, Fuck Mansion."

well, i'm here at uni. i like saying "uni" instead of "university". it's... cuter.
i'm all moved into my house with Jamie and Sam. i'm just so fucking stoked that we live on Christmas Avenue. i'm thinking of having t-shirts made up: Christmas Avenue, where it's Christmas all year 'round!
orientation was on tuesday, and next to grad, it felt like the longest day of my liiiife. we left the house (in the rain, of course) at 8:45 a.m. and didn't get back till 6:15 p.m. during orientation, i made some friends, including a guy from Penticton. we bonded over our Okanagan-ness and that we're in the same film studies class. i also met a girl who belonged to a "rollerblading gang" in her hometown. pretty cool.
we had a convocation ceremony, welcoming first years to the university of victoria. i couldn't help but feel like i was attending Hogwarts due to the fact that all the deans were wearing robes and silly hats in various colours. our guest speaker was Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a.k.a David Suzuki's really inspiring daughter. my dad is probably jealous that i got to see her speak.
THEN we got treated to free burgers, cookies, and condoms, among other things, including a performance from Said The Whale, a band i've repeatedly been told to listen to, but never got around to it. well, now i'll make sure to listen to them. they have a new fan on their hands. they were GOOD. hey, singer guy wearing the red t-shirt and black toque, playing the ukulele occasionally? call me. you cute.
yesterday was the first day of classes, and because tutorials don't start till next week, i only had one afternoon class yesterday, English. what is there to say about English, really? i met two more guys, Sean & Riley, who both shook my hand. awwww.
today i, again, only had one class, Writing at 8:30 in the morning. ("rookie mistake", says my third year cousin). My prof is really cool. he was a budding journalist in the late 1970s/early 1980s, meaning he covered the emerging punk scene in Vancouver. later in his career, he was in charge of the Canadian TV Guide. he proceeded to show us a slideshow of him hanging out with the likes of Iggy Pop, Frank Zappa, Gene Simmons, and even Mary Hart and Marie Osmond. he told us stories about getting shhh-wasted with Motorhead and meeting Lou Reed and his "very obviously male" transvestite girlfriend. i was leaning so far in my seat with "ohmygodthisguyissooooooocoooooool" that i probably looked a little crazy. i like this guy. i hope i like his class.
i don't have art history or film studies till monday & tuesday, and i'm very excited to see how those will go.
that's all for now, and hopefully it only gets better and not too crazy-stressful from here.
